Star Wars Revealed 30 Years Ago Why Palpatine May Never Return

As revealed in Dark Empire, the Legends version of Palpatine learned how to transfer his consciousness through the dark side of the Force into a new host body. Long before his first death at the Battle of Endor, Palpatine had mindless clones of himself created on Byss and kept in suspended animation. The clones were not sentient, instead serving as potential vessels for Palpatine’s mind to inhabit in the event of his death. Presciently, his clones served their purpose, allowing Palpatine to return from the dead multiple times in Dark Empire; but they weren’t perfect. Due to Palpatine’s intense power in the dark side and sabotage from Imperial traitors, his clone bodies would deteriorate soon after he inhabited them, leading him to later attempt to inhabit the body of another being.
As a result, these events provided the basis for Palpatine’s return in canon. Palpatine’s cloning experiments on Exegol were active when Darth Vader visited the Sith Citadel in 2020’s Darth Vader comics, revealing that his backup plans were years in the making. Like his Legends counterpart, canon’s Palpatine ran into a similar issue with his clone bodies being unable to withstand his dark side power. This led to the creation of the strand-cast Snoke, who led the First Order as Palpatine’s puppet, and a clone son who would become Rey’s father. Canon’s Palpatine also sought to inhabit a new body, goading Rey to kill him in his frail cloned state so he could take over her and rule the galaxy through her.
The Force Ghosts Did More Than Empower Rey On Exegol

Palpatine died multiple times in Dark Empire, returning in a new cloned body each time, making his defeat seem impossible. In Empire’s End, Palpatine nearly took over the body of Han Solo and Leia Organa’s third child, Anakin Solo, but he was finally defeated when the Force ghost of Jedi Knight (and Order 66 survivor) Empatojayos Brand, along with the ghosts of every other deceased Jedi, kept Palpatine’s spirit trapped in the afterlife for eternity, preventing him from ever returning from the grave again. Palpatine’s final defeat was made all the more meaningful in Legends, as he’d been the greatest single nemesis of the Jedi Order whose machinations had killed countless Jedi, but, in the end, their spirits kept him from ever returning.
One of the greatest pieces of fanservice in The Rise of Skywalker was when the voices of numerous past Jedi from throughout the Star Wars franchise encouraged and lent their strength to Rey, allowing her to stand against her grandfather and finally defeat him once and for all. Palpatine’s death is seemingly nothing he can’t return from again, as he’d similarly died in an explosion in Return of the Jedi. However, the Jedi voices who empowered Rey on Exegol may be precisely what’s keeping Palpatine from inhabiting a new body in canon, making his final death as fitting as it is in Legends.
How Palpatine Could Return Again

If Palpatine’s final death in the canon is truly the same as in Legends, it’s almost certain that he’ll never return. Should the Star Wars franchise decide that Palpatine must come back yet again, however, there is a way that the saga’s greatest villain can menace the galaxy once more. The spirits of all past Jedi keep Palpatine’s spirit trapped in the afterlife, but perhaps a sufficiently powerful dark side user or many powerful dark side users could collectively weaken the Jedi ghosts’ hold on Palpatine, allowing him to break free. If they also provide a new cloned body for him, Palpatine would be able to return once more. While the Star Wars saga would ideally move on from Palpatine and create new threats to the galaxy, his ultimate demise is paradoxically a fitting end for The Emperor that also allows him to return again if need be.
