Starfinder’s Drift Crisis will change the science-fantasy RPG setting forever

Paizo’s newest RPG franchise, the Starfinder science-fantasy setting, combines cutting-edge technology with swords and magic to take a big step into the future this summer. A new event called Drift Crisis will drastically change the landscape of the entire universe. The product line includes a new sourcebook and two sumptuous Adventure Path campaigns, all complemented by parallel storylines that continue through the Starfinder Society’s organized play program. Polygon offers exclusive previews of the event throughout the year, directly from the designers who helped make it a reality.

Science fiction is full of different interpretations of traveling faster than light. Technology faster than real light exists in the Starfinder world. Star Trek warp drives and Star Wars hyperdrives are extremely rare and expensive to maintain. Instead, the universe relies on an inexpensive form of interdimensional travel.

The vessel first slides into an alternate dimension known as drift before returning to the material plane. Drift allows you to travel huge distances without reaching high speeds. It’s a bit like how space travel works in Warhammer 40,000, but with some pitfalls. The drift was discovered by a powerful AI named Triune. It was the Triune who shared the secrets of Drift-based travel with other sentient races in the Starfinder universe, and it was the Triune that patrolled space and safeguarded the Drift so that travelers could safely travel across the stars.

The drift crisis begins when the Triune goes silent without warning. This also applies to drift-based communication systems used to send messages across galaxies. At that moment, any spacecraft traveling through the drift will violently throw it back into the plane of matter. All fleets are lost among the stars and stranded with no hope of rescue or return. Some ships have completely disappeared and the crew and passengers will never be heard again. To make matters worse, those trying to re-enter the Drift learn that the Drift is no longer a silent, esoteric void, but a deadly serpent with no guaranteed escape.

Starfinder Infinite is a new community publishing platform launched last September in partnership with OneBookShelf. This allows community members to publish and sell their Starfinder compatible material online. Fans should expect lots of new content coming soon to support the Drift Crisis story. “I’d say on a functional scale you absolutely don’t. [functional] 10 is that it works perfectly as intended. Drift Crisis sets it to around 4,” said lead developer John Compton. “The plane is definitely flying, but the weather is really rough during the drift crisis. Also, one of the 4 motors stopped working. So you can probably get to where you’re supposed to go, but there’s a much bigger question mark on it and more people asking whether or not you should try.”

The uncertainty of Drift’s journey is causing tremendous chaos throughout the Starfinder universe. called source book Starfinder Drift Crisis, contains 20 detailed story seeds for game masters (GMs) to choose from in their homebrew campaign. For example, millions of refugees begin pouring into Absalom Station, a pan-galactic furnace and the largest city in the Starfinder galaxy. GMs can choose to have players eliminate ancient ghost levels to make it a safe haven for the homeless crowd. Meanwhile, the reptile Vesk is developing an alternative transport, and players may have to risk drifting and bring the best scientists to the table to complete the project.

These are not closed arcs with a start, middle and end. Instead, they are detailed scenarios, a starting point for an open-ended, player-driven adventure. Decisions about the direction of the story rest with the people at the table, and Paizo won’t make it easy.

“Many of the storylines in Drift Crisis really thrive, at least in hints of moral ambiguity, because many don’t have real answers at this time,” Compton said. “One of the advantages of not scripting every element of these adventures is how much that point on the continuum is between the GM and the player. [they] I want to unravel a philosophical mystery. […] and how much [they] I want to break the door and shoot the aliens. Both are fine.”

As well as Starfinder Drift Crisis, available as a hardcover book or PDF, Paizo will also reveal two adventure routes. first, title drift crasher, which will be launched in June, will take on the characters from level 1 to level 7. Across three 64-page modules, players will explore Drift Crisis from the inside, traveling not only through chaotic and dangerous dimensions, but also through time itself.

After that in October drift hacker Adventure Path features the canonical conclusion of Drift Crisis and accommodates characters from level 7 to level 13. At the same time, the Starfinder Society’s Organized Play program carries out its own parallel adventures covering similar events and topics.

Most interestingly, Paizo makes the drift crisis narratively backwards compatible. Starfinder Drift Crisis The Starfinder catalog will include ways to include dramatic events for every single adventure series previously released.

“It gives us an opportunity to show that our environment is not static, it’s evolving, and we can do so in a way that presents meaningful change without essentially nullifying what we’ve written before,” Compton said. “People who play it can all have a comic book event-style situation where they all participate in a great cause and feel like they’re part of the story.”

Pizo says the drift crisis is big enough that it should leave enough room for everyone in the Starfinder community to feel like their character has made a difference.

“This is important to me,” Compton said. “‘Someone in this corner saved the world! Nobody talks about it again.” I don’t like that kind of thing, and the drift crisis is a really different interpretation of that. I’m looking forward to it.”

These aren’t finalized arcs with a beginning, middle, and end. Instead, they are detailed scenarios, starting points for open-ended, player-led adventures. It’s up to those at the table to make their own decisions on where the story goes, and Paizo won’t be making it easy.
“A lot of the Drift Crisis storylines really thrive on at least a hint of that moral ambiguity, because a lot of this has no right answer at the time,” Compton said. “One of the benefits of not scripting every element of these adventures out is that it leaves that point in the continuum for the GM and the players to decide how much [they] want to delve into some of the philosophical conundrums […] and how much [they] just want to kick in the door and shoot some aliens. Either one’s fine.”
In addition to the Starfinder Drift Crisis, which will be available as a hardcover book or a PDF, Paizo will also publish two Adventure Paths — fully formed campaign arcs that will be released episodically. The first, titled Drift Crashers, kicks off in June and will take characters from first all the way up to seventh level.
