Summer Game Fest Is The Biggest Hint A Nintendo Direct Is On Its Way

Only a few bumpers were available at the Summer Game Fest, one showing off a few independent titles coming to the platform and one showing off Mario Strikers Battle League, with the Neon White release being the only substantial new information about Switch and PC exclusives. However, Nintendo hasn’t primarily used other games conferences to show off its titles, especially because it wants to advertise the Switch. Nintendo has revealed new games and trailers at The Game Awards before, but it has saved big announcements for its own conferences.

There are plenty of games in the works for Switch that haven’t gotten any updates since last year like Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2, and Live A Live. Updates and release dates for these games would not only be useful for fans and would help Nintendo keep interest in the Switch high. Fire Emblem: Three Hopes announced a demo and Splatoon 3 has had trailers recently, but Nintendo needs to bring something new in order to impress this year. The lack of big announcements in the Summer Game Fest only makes the conference more likely, as all these titles should have news about them available in the coming weeks.

Strategically, it would be a misfire for Nintendo not to present a Nintendo Direct around June 2022. The Xbox and Bethesda Showcase happens on June 12 and Sony has already done its State of Play. Nintendo not doing a Direct would put the company far behind its competitors and risk alienating its fans. In the past, Nintendo has usually waited until less than a week before announcing its Nintendo Directs, so there’s still plenty of time for more Switch news to come out.
