Superman Fan Comic Tells The Jon Kent Story That Deserves To Be Told

The newest Superman, Jon Kent, has certainly been busy since he took over for his father as the world’s greatest protector, but a fan comic on Twitter is making the case that a big part of Jonathan’s life hasn’t gotten the attention it needs.

Jonathan Kent came onto the scene as the sort of precocious and idealistic hero one would expect as the offspring of Clark Kent and Lois Lane. For years, Jon served as the newest Superboy, learning the ropes of heroism and fighting crime alongside DC heroes like Superman and Robin. But just as the world was getting to know the new addition to the Super Family, Jonathan was spirited away by his grandfather Jor-El, before being taken captive by Earth-3’s Ultraman. The bright-eyed youth was trapped on Earth-3 for years before he made his way back to his parents on the Prime Earth, years older than they remembered him.

Since Jon came back from his multiversal excursion, he’s been thrust from one adventure to another, never truly stopping to process the events he went through. But one artist has crafted a short fan comic that has Jon Kent pause his Superman work and really explore the traumatic event he went through. On Twitter, user @solointhewinter began the journey with a post that said, in part, “Couldn’t stop thinking about the idea Clark and Lois still see Jon as a little kid so I’m making a story about it.” The comic portrays Jon feeling as though he doesn’t belong in his world anymore, with everyone not completely adjusted to the hero’s sudden leap in age. Unable to deal with the stress, Jon Kent tries to save Superboy from Ultraman by traveling back in time, only to realize how much more jaded he’s become in comparison to his younger self.

Jon Kent became Superman extremely fast. He was introduced in 2015 during the Convergence event and just four years later he was aged up. And two years after that, he succeeded his father as the Earth’s Man of Steel after Clark left to liberate Warworld. Things have basically moved at a nonstop pace for Jon since he first hit the scene, but @solointhewinter’s comic shows that a fantastic and truly introspective story might have been passed over. Considering that Superman comics generally focus on action, it’s understandable that more time would showcase Jon as a worthy successor to the Superman title. But what this fan comic shows is that focusing on pathos can make for an engaging read.

Jon was separated from his family and friends for years, held captive by an evil man wearing his father’s face and, at the end of it, comes home to a place where time has essentially stood still. That’s a lot of traumatic things to happen to such a young character and it’s the sort of thing that deserves to be fleshed out. Jon Kent has been busy as Superman, but a reflection on the rapid changes in his life could be a fantastic opportunity to explore the new Man of Steel on a deeper level.
