The recently reissued Model D synth from legendary synth maker Moog costs around $4,000. Moog also makes a version of the iPad app for the same device for $14.99. So, why bother with (now discontinued) hardware? Complex.

A software synthesizer may sound as easy as hardware that is many times more expensive. And if the hardware in question is digital rather than relying on analog circuitry, the difference won’t be noticeable. But musicians continue to buy large synths, place them on studio shelves, and take them to the theatre. why?

“I don’t know the secret. [digital processing] The source is included in the Moog Model D app, but it’s probably the best sounding synth I’ve ever heard in my life. It doesn’t matter if it sounds like hardware or not. It just likes it as it is,” electronic musician and synth enthusiast Williohm told Lifewire in a message on his forum.

One of the main reasons musicians mention when they ask why they prefer hardware is because of the handle and the knob. This also means you can learn like any other instrument, rather than staring at the screen. The buttons are always in the same place and you can build up your “muscle memory” which makes it much smoother to use.

However, being able to connect a soft synthesizer to a good MIDI controller gives you many of the benefits of fixed hardware along with the added benefit of software. When you use a plug-in in Logic Pro, Ableton Live, or Pro Tools, you can save its settings with your project. I’ll come back to this song later, dust it off, no need to hook up hardware, and use multiple versions of the same plugin at the same time. Try it with your hardware.
