The Simpsons: Hit & Run devs explain how they were influenced by GTA 3

The developers of The Simpsons: Hit & Run explained how much they were influenced by Grand Theft Auto III and were inspired by Rockstar’s existing series.

Simpsons: Hit & Run developers Christopher Mitchell, Steve Bocksa, and Nigel Brooke talked to Retro Gamer about the thought process and the impact behind the game. Mitchell claims that “without GTA III, there wouldn’t have been Simpsons: Hit & Run.” But instead of mimicking Liberty City, Hit & Run brought the fantasy world of Springfield to life. The team first attempted to recreate the areas featured in the show, and eventually built GTA III-inspired racetracks throughout the city. However, the main problem during production was the driving AI. NPCs have difficulty navigating narrow, tight spaces, limiting the vehicle’s speed. Exhilarating speed is an integral part of a GTA game, so we fixed the issue based on feedback from our testers.

One issue raised by Radical Entertainment was the feel of the game. Will you drive the car and play the mission game, or get out of the car and play the mission game? When Mitchell joined the project, the focus was on getting him out of the car game. Rather than relying solely on the Simpsons brand, the time has come to make a decision that has helped differentiate it from other versions of GTA on the market. Follow their success. That’s not to say the show didn’t have a huge impact on the game throughout development. The script has been sent to the Simpsons authors for review and approval. As a mega fan of the show, Mitchell was “frustrated” to work with the show’s screenwriters and see his jokes make it into the final script.

Fans of The Simpsons: Hit & Run have long requested a remake or remaster, and one of them has decided to remake it with Unreal Engine 5, a project that even got props from the game’s main designer. Joe McGinn.
