This handheld PS2 is like the Sony Switch circa 2000

Someone has built a custom portable PS2 to play Kingdom Hearts, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and other Nintendo Switch-style PlayStation classics on the go.

GingerOfOz’s “PS2 Eclipse” consists of a disassembled PS2 motherboard housed in a sleek 3D-printed case painted black to match the PS Vita buttons and switch joystick. Because the handheld console uses Sony’s original motherboard, it can be played at smooth and full speed without the need to emulate real PS2 games.

The PS2 Eclipse features a 5-inch 480p screen, side speakers, a battery life indicator, and a headphone jack. Since there is no hard drive, games have to be ported very slowly over USB, and as Verge points out, some games may stutter a bit and take long load times. But to be honest, this seems like a small compromise on an impressively clean rig.

GingerOfOz says there are currently no plans to sell the PS2 Eclipse, but that could change once it gets enough attention. For now, I’ll share with you our developer’s analysis of how the handheld PS2 works at a technical level and how you can build it yourself.

If you’re looking for the latest and greatest handheld games, take a look at Valve’s Steam Deck, a gaming laptop essentially designed to resemble a handheld Switch. We were lucky enough to take the time to use a portable device for a hands-on preview of the Steam Deck, and it was more than impressive. Pre-orders are available now, but due to demand, new orders will not ship after Q2 2022, well after the original launch in December 2021.
