In an interview with Play Magazine, Crifo revealed the complexities behind game development, influenced by the developer’s hometown, the South Pacific archipelago of New Caledonia, where Dehru is the developer’s native language and where folklore permeates nature and animals.
A key factor that draws players to the island is the use of the country’s native language and music. Play explains: It is the most spoken language on the island, but that means it is still spoken by only a few thousand people.” New Caledonia is a French colony. However, that does not mean that the national language is French. French remains the official language, but the Kanak language adds color and vibrancy to the island. Drehu is a Kanak language with Austro-Asiatic roots, spoken by 12,000 people alone.
This niche language makes it difficult to find voice actors, so all voice actors are local. Play explained, “The team went around the island looking for people and asked if they would like to try a voice actor.” These extra steps are time consuming, but they help solidify the personality of the game. According to Crifo, “Language creates very unique soundscapes for games and actually brings characters to life.”
A release date hasn’t been confirmed yet, but the game is expected to hit PC, PS4, and PS5 later this year.
