Verizon 5G: Looking to the Future

The high speeds and low latency of 5G services are poised to dramatically change many industries and potentially create new ones. Verizon is investing in several areas where this new technology could have a huge impact.

In November 2018, Verizon used 5G technology to provide fans with a virtual reality experience during a basketball game between the Sacramento Kings and the Los Angeles Lakers.

Verizon has built the 5G First Responders Lab to test how 5G can improve public safety. In 2019, we implemented 15 “new technologies powered by 5G”.

The Verizon 5G Robotics Challenge aimed to get participants to discover how 5G will impact the robotics industry. The lab was available to universities and startups in the Boston, Massachusetts area, and the winner received a $300,000 grant.

According to Verizon 2019 Investor Meeting documents, the company will also offer a 5G FWA service called 5G Office, a derivative of 5G Home that targets small and medium-sized businesses. Verizon is testing pricing options for 5G Office, but no further details are available at this time.

At Super Bowl 2020, Verizon worked with the NFL to develop augmented reality overlay support and multi-camera views of stats and plays for all Verizon 5G Ultra Wideband customers using the NFL OnePass app.

As of September 2019, Verizon’s FWA 5G products were based on the 5G TF standard (Verizon’s 5G Technology Forum), but 5G mobile networks and all future implementations of FWA will use 5G NR (3GPP 5G New Radio).
