Vincent Cassel set to star in David Cronenberg’s newest thriller
Vincent Cassel is back working with David Cronenberg for the director’s next film, Shrouds.
According to Deadline, the thriller will star as Karsh, a grieving widower, who creates an innovative device for Kassel to bond with the dead in a shroud. Installed in his state-of-the-art cemetery, the device allows him and his clients to watch their loved ones decay in real time. Karsh is on the verge of mainstream success when several graves in his cemetery, including that of his wife, are vandalized and nearly destroyed. As Karsh struggles to find a motive for his attack, he begins to reevaluate his business, his marriage, and his entire life.
Cronenberg and Cassel first worked together in 2007 on Eastern Promises, a gangster film that also starred Naomi Watts and Viggo Mortensen. The two worked together again in 2011 in A Dangerous Method, a historical film about the basics of psychology in which Kassel played Otto Gross, an Austrian psychoanalyst and Sigmund Freud student.
The director’s latest film, ‘Future Crimes’, will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and compete for the Palme d’Or. The film commemorates Cronenberg’s return to the body horror genre, most recently with 1999’s ExistenZ. Although The Shrouds is being marketed as a thriller, there will certainly be Cronenberg’s signature meaty nightmare flicker in a movie about machines that lets people see them disassemble. .
