Where Is 5G Available in Canada? (Updated for 2022)

5G first appeared in 2020

Canada has joined many other countries in building 5G networks. A quick launch depends on a number of factors, including the company providing the network, but quite a few have a live network.

5G gives you insanely faster speeds than 4G, so you can access the internet faster. Faster Internet access is enhancing many industries, allowing them to perform tasks such as downloading files and watching movies and video games with virtually no lag.

If you don’t live in Canada, you can still use 5G service in your area. See Where is 5G available in the US? 5G availability worldwide. Also, check out the latest 5G news and updates to keep up with our daily progress.

5G launch in Canada

There are currently several 5G networks in Canada that customers can purchase and use just like 4G. Others are actively working to bring test networks into the country and prepare them for commercialization of 5G for mobile devices.

The 5G Challenge: Why It Isn’t Coming Sooner

Telus is a company launching 5G in Canada. In June 2020, we started expanding our network in Vancouver, Montreal, Calgary, Edmonton and Toronto, with more cities added since.

Rogers Communications is another company. They started rolling out their first 5G networks in Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal in January 2020, adding dozens of locations by fall 2020, adding 10 locations in early 2021, and finally the US in 2022. Launched the first commercial 5G standalone network. The current number is over 1,500 parishes (here is a map). All the benefits of the network can be enjoyed by 5G phones. Customers with Bell 5G phones will also have access to 5G. Use our coverage map to see where 5G service is available in Vancouver, Manitoba, Ontario, and more. Expansion is in progress.

TeraGo is another 5G player. In early 2020, they started testing 5G wired wireless using Nokia devices. They say 5G FWA trials will begin in the Greater Toronto Area in early 2021, enabling speeds of up to 1.5 Gbps.

At the end of 2020, Videotron built a new network. They said it will start in Montreal before continuing elsewhere in Quebec.

In April 2021, SaskTel announced an investment of $55 million in Saskatchewan in 2021 and 2022 to roll out 5G. In December 2021, they began deploying the network to lay the groundwork for future connectivity in the region.

Xplornet launched Canada’s first rural 5G standalone fixed radio access network in September 2021. The service will begin in New Brunswick and expand to 250 additional communities across the country by 2022.
