Where Is 5G Available in South Korea? (Updated for 2022)

5G was first launched in 2018.

5G networks in South Korea have been available since the end of 2018, but like most 5G networks around the world, only a few customers can access them at this time.

The country’s mobile network operators started offering 5G services to their customers in April 2019. Coverage was initially limited, but will expand throughout the year.

The Korean government’s Ministry of Science and ICT predicts that by 2026, 90% of mobile phone users in Korea will have access to an upgraded network.

For those unfamiliar, here is a brief introduction to 5G. About every decade, a new mobile network technology standard is developed to improve the existing standard (in this case 4G). The speed of 5G is a major advantage over 4G that 5G networks can change the way we live our daily lives.

There are three companies that have agreed to introduce 5G to Korea: SK Telecom (SKT), KT, and LG U+. The official launch was December 1, 2018, but 5G was only available to a handful of customers.

On April 3, 5G general consumer service in Korea began in earnest. They could start using 5G on April 5, 2019 with the launch of the country’s first 5G phone, the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G.

The 5G Challenge: Why It Isn’t Coming Sooner

SKT 5G access started as a service only for one manufacturer in Ansan called Myunghwa Industry. The company later offered 5G services to other users through various 5G plans. Some are data limit, others are data limit. SKT’s 5G plan ranges from $48 to $110 per month.

SK Telecom started its journey to 5G with an outdoor 5G pilot project in Seoul in 2017, and soon showed 5G technology in K-City, an autonomous driving city. In 2018, their 5G test network allowed the two cars to communicate with each other, and in early 2019 they had their first 5G live TV broadcast. This 5G launch marks the end of 2G services.

SKT is also part of a 5G smart factory partnership with more than a dozen other companies. Announced at the end of 2018, the alliance was formed for two reasons: to study how 5G could improve factory performance, and to support government plans to build tens of thousands of smart factories.

South Korea’s 5G provider, LG Uplus, is operating unlimited 5G network plans in Seoul and other nearby areas, and is moving forward with wider coverage, deploying more than 7,000 5G base stations in 2018. Their first 5G customer was LS Mtron.

KT’s 5G plan is called the KT 5G Super Plan and is divided into three packages: Basic, Special, and Premium. KT’s 5G plan includes data roaming in more than 180 countries and unlimited 5G data without speed limits.

KT was the first to build a 5G network at Lotte World Tower in Seoul by 2020, providing 5G to more than 80 cities. Prior to the launch of 5G, KT and Intel demonstrated 5G at the 2018 Winter Olympics, promising to invest $20 billion by 2023 to research how best to utilize 5G.

South Korean 5G networks have been available since late 2018, but like most 5G networks around the world, only select customers have access…for now.

Here’s a quick primer on 5G if you’re not familiar: Every decade or so, a new mobile networking technology standard is developed to improve upon the older one—4G in this case. 5G’s speed is the primary advantage it has over 4G, which is what allows 5G networks to change the way we live our everyday lives.
