Why all the genital tweaks in The Northman? ‘You can’t have penises on airplanes’

Eggers added that the digital effects he used in the scenes had an additional purpose. “There’s a little CG enhancement to the acting to make sure everything is covered,” he says. “But most of the scenes were practical and everything was there.”

While the characters in the scene fight naked in a cultural sense, the 21st-century sensibility is different, which creates problems with scene composition, Eggers says. “A movie of this size should be playable on an airplane, and you can’t have a penis on an airplane,” he told Polygon. “It’s a bit embarrassing. It would have been great if some of the Berserkers who took part in the raid were completely naked.”

At the same time, he wanted the audience to focus on the original brutal nature of the battle, rather than the actor’s anatomy. “I think it might have been a distraction if we were wielding something at the end of the fight,” he says. “When we were actually filming, they were just wearing thongs as a courtesy. And security. [laughs] So we actually had to use genital CG augmentation. In ~, to make it look like a Ken doll. So we make sure it’s always covering things while we smoke, but sometimes we had to flash our testicles very quickly to escape the smoke and keep the illusion alive.

A modern audience may associate nudity with vulnerability or sexuality, but the Viking society Eggers investigated here would have associated nudity with conscious masculinity, aggression, and power. Eggers just laughs when asked if his cast has a process for breaking the nudity taboo and embracing that mindset.

At the same time, he wanted the audience focused on the primal, brutal nature of the fight, not on his actors’ anatomy. “I think if we had bits swinging around in the end fight, maybe that would have been distracting,” he says. “They were wearing thongs when we actually shot it, just for modesty. And safety. [laughs] And so we actually had to put CG genital enhancement in, to make them look less Ken doll-like. So while we’re having smoke make sure it’s always covering stuff, occasionally, we needed to break away from the smoke and show some testicles really quickly, just to help keep the illusion alive.”
